Brian Beals, an Englewood native, was wrongfully convicted of a crime in 1988.  He spent 35 years in prison before being exonerated in December 2023, marking one of Illinois’ longest wrongful incarcerations. With support from his sister and the Illinois Innocence Project, new evidence and recanted testimonies proved his innocence. While imprisoned, Beals mentored others and co-founded an award-winning theater program. Now free, he is rebuilding his life, advocating for prison reform, and planning to bring arts and mentorship programs to his community.
